Rain Garden Construction

(Find easy to understand, step-by-step instructions and pointers on how to construct a rain garden in your own back yard!)

Here are some easy steps to help you build a rain garden. Key steps including sizing, choosing the appropriate plants, construction, planting, and maintenance. Some of the steps you might want to hire a professional landscaper to help with. If you keep your design simple, the garden will be cheaper.

1. Use rope to mark the boundary of your rain garden. Make sure that there is plenty of sunlight. The size should relate to a roof or driveway that is draining. If you are not relating to one, 150-300 square feet is recommended in either case. Make sure that it is 10-30 feet away from a foundation (20 feet is perfect.

2. Before you start digging your rain garden, don't forget to find out where your local underground local utilities are located. This prevents injuries, and it is the law. Dig the garden 3-4 inches in depth and make the bottom as level as possible. Make sure that there is a slight slope in some direction, such as towards a house, to trap the rain water. Remember, the purpose of building a rain garden is to soak up runoff and help deplete pollution.

3. If you need help choosing plants, talk to the Native plant society. Begin planting your plants. Place them before you dig, that way you can decide if you like where they are. Put plants that can withstand more moisture in the middle, and ones that cannot towards the outside. Dig the holes twice as wide as the pot and deep enough to touch the crown of the plant at ground level. Water right after

4. Water the plants twice a week until they are flourishing, unless it rains. After the first season you should not have to water them unless there is a long drought.

5. Weeds have a hard time growing in a mature garden, until then, you may have to weed a little. Stalks can be cut back or mowed in the spring to give the new growth a good start. Enjoy!
